EURATEX (The European Apparel and Textile Organisation) has launched a project ‘Towards European Sericulture’ for the further betterment and development of the silk industry of Europe.

Of late, it has been observed that European silk industry is seeking for opportunities to capitalize in this segment. Philippe de Montgrand, President of AIUFFASS Silk Section too emphasized that silk industry in Europe has a long tradition combined with a strong capacity to innovate. About 200 silk producing SMEs are concentrated in Lombardy (Italy) and Rhône-Alpes (France) providing 20,000 direct jobs.

The press release from the association states that currently raw silk supplies mainly depend on China and the EU fashion brands and silk manufacturers are concerned by the long-term access to high-quality raw silk and the risk of supply shortage. It is a long-term project which will combine research and investments aimed to re-appropriate the knowledge of sericulture, continuously improve the quality of raw material and secure its supply.

EURATEX represents the European textile and clothing industry, and its foremost objective is to create an environment within the European Union which is conducive to the manufacture of textile and clothing products. It promotes the interests of its members while taking into account the European Union’s institutional framework and its international obligations.
